The Changan BenBen is an iconic micro car series from Changan Automobile. Serving as the trailblazer for Changan's proprietary passenger car strategy, the BenBen has evolved from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrains to a fully electric architecture since its inception in 2006. It not only played a pivotal role in popularising micro cars across China, but also served as a testing ground for Changan Automobile to hone its design and production standards for budget-friendly passenger cars, cementing its strategic significance in the marque's history.

Positioned as an A00-segment micro car, the Changan BenBen typically measures around 3.7 metres in overall length. Marketed as an affordable people's runabout and a cost-effective city commuter, its key highlights include a distinctive, rounded, and nimble exterior design, class-leading packaging efficiency, effortless drivability, and a highly competitive all-electric range in its later lifecycle. The model was engineered to cater to demands for second family cars, urban short-distance runabouts, and entry-level options for young motorists courtesy of its accessible price point and low running costs.
Inception and the ICE Era (2006–2015): In November 2006, the first-generation Changan BenBen made its official debut. Developed in-house over three years as Changan's maiden proprietary passenger car, the BenBen filled a notable void in the domestic budget passenger car segment. Early variants were powered by a 1.3-litre naturally aspirated engine, quickly finding favour among younger buyers thanks to its decent performance and wallet-friendly pricing. The BenBen line-up subsequently expanded with spin-offs such as the BenBen i and BenBen MINI, becoming a ubiquitous sight on Chinese roads throughout the mid-to-late 2000s.
Electric Transition (2016–2020): Riding on the boom of China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sector, the Changan BenBen embarked on an all-electric transition. The launch of the BenBen EV signalled the nameplate's formal shift from petrol power to zero-emission motoring. Re-engineered on the existing platform, the BenBen EV addressed the higher fuel consumption of its petrol predecessor, building a solid reputation in the urban commuter market with its smooth electric power delivery and low running costs.
Peak and Phasing Out (2021–2023): The BenBen E-Star emerged as the definitive all-electric offering in the line-up. Backed by a competitive 300-km-class driving range and value-driven pricing, the BenBen E-Star became a sales sensation in the micro EV segment around 2021. However, as Changan Automobile shifted its strategic focus towards premiumisation and dedicated NEV sub-brands (such as DEEPAL, AVATR, and LUMIN), the BenBen series concluded its lifecycle around 2023 and was phased out. Its production capacity and market presence were subsequently handed over to modern, tech-laden micro EVs like the Changan LUMIN.
Across its nearly twenty-year lifecycle, the Changan BenBen demonstrated exceptional market resilience. In the ICE era, it served as the first car for countless households, establishing a substantial presence in lower-tier cities. In the electric era, the success of the BenBen E-Star validated Changan's engineering capabilities in compact EV platforms, helping the carmaker accumulate significant NEV credits and valuable demographic insights from younger buyers. Although it has since bowed out of the new car market, the model remains a sought-after option in the used car market, continually changing hands among budget-conscious buyers due to its bulletproof reliability, durability, and hassle-free maintenance.
Powertrain: Early ICE versions were powered by 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines, mated to either a manual or an automated manual transmission (AMT). The subsequent all-electric BenBen E-Star adopted a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering around 55 kW, paired with either lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or ternary lithium battery packs. It delivered a CLTC-rated range exceeding 300 km and supported DC fast charging.
Platform Architecture: Across generations, the BenBen stuck to a lightweight engineering philosophy, featuring a straightforward and practical chassis setup (front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam). This packaging maximised interior cabin space without compromising basic crash protection and driving dynamics, resulting in outstanding space utilisation.
Infotainment and Connectivity: The BenBen E-Star was upgraded with dual connected digital displays and an intuitive intelligent interface, offering voice control, remote vehicle telematics, and smartphone app integration, bringing connectivity on par with mainstream market offerings.
Safety: In terms of passive safety, the BenBen utilised a high-strength steel safety cage structure. Active and passive safety kit included dual front airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and electronic stability control (ESC), ensuring comprehensive occupant protection in compliance with regulatory safety standards.
The Changan BenBen represents a pivotal milestone in Changan Automobile's evolution from a traditional manufacturer into a technology-driven automaker. It not only served as a masterclass for Changan in developing high-quality mass-market cars, but also spearheaded vital engineering iterations and market validation during the EV transition. While the BenBen badge has retired from showroom floors, its legacy—including compact platform packaging, battery management systems, and extensive user telemetry—has been carried over into Changan's dedicated electric architectures (such as the EPA platform), driving the brand's ongoing NEV expansion.
